“A Bridge to The Future”

painting by Harley Miller

August 2017

(A description of the scene is included with the print)

The Queensferry Crossing is situated 10 miles north of Edinburgh and spans the River Forth. My first view of the completed bridge was against a stormy mass of cumulus clouds when the bridge was suddenly revealed as an ethereal work of art whilst almost vanishing in a bright shaft of sun light.

The Bridge is the third crossing of The Forth alongside the Forth Road Bridge, built in 1964 and the Forth Railway Bridge, built in 1890.  The northern landfall of Queensferry Crossing is at St Margaret's Hope, between Rosyth Dockyard and North Queensferry and the southern landfall, just west of Port Edgar in South Queensferry. The Queensferry Crossing is a cable-stayed bridge, with three towers each measuring 207 metres (679 ft) high.  The overall length of the bridge is 2.7 kilometres (1.7 miles) - the longest triple tower cable-stayed bridge in the world. Wind shielding is built into the design enabling the use of the bridge in high winds by high-sided vehicles. The central tower is constructed on the small islet of Beamer Rock which involved the removal of a small lighthouse.

“A Bridge to The Future”

celebrating the completion of

the Queensferry Crossing over

The Forth estuary

My first view of the completed bridge was against a stormy mass of cumulus clouds when the bridge was suddenly revealed as an ethereal work of art whilst almost vanishing in a bright shaft of sun light - how could I not paint the experience!
